Storm Ivo is set to hit Devon and Cornwall today, bringing 50mph winds and heavy rain, especially in southern England, with flood warnings in effect.
Devon: Storm Ivo is here, and it’s bringing some serious winds. The storm, named by meteorologists in Portugal, is expected to hit the UK today. Coastal areas are preparing for strong gales and heavy rain.
Southern England will feel the worst of it. East Sussex, West Sussex, and Kent are gearing up for a wet afternoon. Winds could reach 50mph, especially in Devon during the evening rush hour. Cornwall will also see strong winds tonight.
In fact, Cornwall might experience gusts up to 57mph at St Just. Salcombe in Devon could see winds of 48mph. The Met Office hasn’t officially named the storm in the UK, suggesting it won’t be as severe as last week’s Storm Éowyn.
That storm caused significant disruption, including school closures and tragic loss of life. However, the Met Office warns of heavy rain and thickening clouds in the far south today.
According to meteorologist Alex Burkill, heavy rain will sweep across southern England. He mentioned that while there’s some uncertainty about how far north the rain will go, it’s likely to affect parts of Southwest and Southeast England.
Rain is expected to linger into Wednesday night, especially in Kent and East Sussex. The Environment Agency has issued 25 flood warnings, including areas in West Sussex and Berkshire.
In Somerset, over 100 people were evacuated due to flooding, prompting a major incident declaration by Somerset Council. Stay safe and keep an eye on the weather!
