Exeter: So, there’s a bit of a situation happening near the racecourse. Travellers have been living on a site without permission, and now they’ve got six months to pack up and leave.

The council is worried about where these folks will go. One councillor, Janet Bradford, really expressed her concern. She said, “I can’t vote for people to be made homeless. We need to have some humanity here.”

There are about 15 caravans on this old car park site, and they’ve been there for nearly two years. The council tried to get them to move last September, but their application for more caravan pitches was denied.

The only legal site nearby is full, and there’s a waiting list. Talks are happening to find another spot, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Some councillors pointed out that the area is a bit of a mess, with rubbish and scrap metal lying around. One suggested that the council should just take over the site instead of pushing people out.

Another councillor, Alex Hall, felt uneasy about moving people without a backup plan. But in the end, the committee decided to move forward with the eviction. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved.
