Sainsbury’s is closing four cafes in Devon, part of a big shake-up to save costs and focus on more popular food options.
They’re shutting down 61 in-store cafes across the UK. This comes after they closed 200 cafes a few years back. Shoppers just aren’t visiting them like before.
Instead, Sainsbury’s is focusing on food halls and other popular options. They’ll also close hot food and pizza counters. The best items will be moved to the aisles.
This move is part of a plan to save £1 billion over three years. Sadly, it means over 3,000 jobs will be lost.
In Devon, the cafes closing are in Exeter, Barnstaple, Plymouth, and Torquay. They’re also cutting about 20% of senior management roles.
Even though Sainsbury’s had a strong Christmas season, they need to cut costs. Last year, they let go of around 1,500 workers. They’re looking for ways to redeploy affected staff where they can.
