North Dublin is taking action to improve safety on evening public transport after recent alarming incidents
Dublin: There’s been a lot of talk about safety on public transport lately. A motion was passed to boost security on evening buses and trains in north Dublin. This comes after some pretty alarming incidents that have left folks feeling uneasy.
Cllr Supriya Singh brought this up during a recent meeting. She pointed out that public transport has become a scary place for many. Just think about it—an attack at Raheny DART station by ten youths! And not long before that, two men were targeted at Clongriffin DART station. It’s really concerning.
These aren’t just random events. They show a bigger issue with anti-social behavior that’s making people feel unsafe. It’s especially tough for vulnerable groups like women, the elderly, and anyone traveling alone. The fear of violence is just too much for something that should be simple.
Cllr Singh is calling for security personnel to be deployed on public transport, especially during the evenings. She believes having Gardaí and security staff around would really help deter crime and make passengers feel safer.
The committee was all in favor of this motion. Chairperson Daryl Barron mentioned that it would be sent to the National Transport Authority and other important groups. Earlier this month, a pilot program called “Safer Journeys” was launched on Dublin Bus. It includes two mobile units to cover both sides of the city.
These teams are out there Sunday to Thursday from 2 PM to 2 AM, and Friday and Saturday from 4 PM to 4 AM. Their goal is to provide visible support and help in various situations, from giving directions to handling security issues. It’s all about making everyone feel more secure while traveling.
