Popular Glasgow west end bar The Thornwood closes March 29. Regulars reminisce as owner Ferrier departs.
Ferrier is opening Bearsden Athletic Club in the old 55 Bearsden Cross pub, located on Drymen Road. The Thornwood’s future is uncertain now, and a new owner might change the bar. Some want it to be a traditional pub again.
Locals are upset about Ferrier’s departure. Margaret Mckelvie misses the landmark bar, as she lived near it for twenty-five years. It was her dad’s local spot, and she remembers the karaoke nights.
Neil Bartlett is also disappointed, as he enjoys the food, drinks, and staff. Christopher Sanderson blames changing social habits, saying people socialize online more now. Pubs are closing because of various issues.
Fran Macnab says the bar has been there for years. Suzanne Brown remembers her uncle’s local spot. Ruairidh Duncan loves The Thornwood too, noting the staff were always great to them. They also liked that their pup was welcome.
Ferrier shared news on Instagram, stating they are handing back the keys. He hoped to share the news differently. The last day will be March 29. He trusts his staff will do well, and encourages people to visit. He also offers advice to future tenants.
