London: If you love gardening, now’s the time to get your hands dirty. Fiona Jenkins, a gardening expert, has some great tips for planting bulbs this winter.

She says that planting the right bulbs now can lead to a beautiful garden come spring. Some bulbs just can’t handle the cold, so it’s key to choose wisely.

Fiona suggests starting with resilient lilies. They can be planted from autumn to spring and love rich, well-draining soil. Just make sure to plant them about 15 to 20 cm deep.

If your soil is heavy, no worries! You can grow lilies in pots too. They’ll look amazing on your patio and can later be moved to your garden.

Next up are Liatris plants. These hardy perennials attract butterflies and bees, making your garden lively. They need well-draining soil and sunlight, so plant them about five cm deep.

Now, let’s talk tulips. While they’re usually planted in autumn, Fiona says you can still plant them in winter for a lovely spring show. Just find a sunny spot with good soil.

Daffodils are another option. You can plant them in January and February. Just loosen the soil, add some fertilizer, and cover them with mulch. Easy peasy!

Lastly, consider Eucomis bulbs. They’re typically spring-planted, but starting them in pots now is a smart move. Plant them about 15 cm deep, and once they grow, you can move them to your garden after the frost.

By picking the right bulbs and planting them now, you’ll set yourself up for a colorful garden in the months ahead.
