Exeter: Southbrook School has made some big strides recently. Ofsted inspectors noted improvements in behavior, personal development, and leadership. However, the quality of education still needs work.
The inspection took place on November 26 and 27, 2024. The report highlighted a positive atmosphere at the school. Pupils enjoy their time there and feel safe. They appreciate the support from staff and learn to make good choices.
All students at Southbrook have education, health, and care plans. The curriculum is tailored to their needs. But the report pointed out that there are inconsistencies in how the curriculum is delivered. Some students struggle in certain subjects.
Parents and caregivers are very supportive of the school. Ofsted mentioned that strong relationships exist among students, staff, and families. Many parents feel their children are at the center of the school’s efforts.
The leadership team is aware of the areas needing improvement and is already making changes. Ofsted noted that leaders have identified key areas to enhance education and have started to raise standards effectively.
Consistency in teaching and curriculum delivery is still a work in progress. The school has outlined essential knowledge for students but needs to refine how it’s taught. This will help staff better support students in reaching their goals.
Reading is a top priority at Southbrook. The school uses various methods to engage students with reading. Many students enjoy listening to stories and exploring books in the library. Those receiving regular phonics instruction are making good progress.
The report also praised the school’s personal development programs. Staff work together to help students learn essential life skills, like budgeting and cooking healthy meals. A strong careers program helps students make informed job choices.
Ofsted commended the school’s behavior management. Students learn to respect differences and understand their feelings. This approach has led to fewer behavior incidents.
Safeguarding measures at Southbrook are effective, ensuring students feel safe and supported.
To improve further, Ofsted recommended that the school help staff better understand the revised curriculum and use assessment data to adapt teaching for better student outcomes.

Simon Winward, the headteacher since October 2022, expressed pride in the school’s journey of improvement. He noted that significant work has gone into developing a strong curriculum that meets students’ needs.
