Braunton Academy presents a thrilling adaptation of Treasure Island for three nights, featuring a young girl as the hero and live music from local students.
The play is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story. It was adapted by Byrony Laverny and received praise during its run at London’s National Theatre.
Byrony Laverny describes her adaptation as a thrilling journey. She highlights memorable moments, like the arrival of pirates and the search for treasure.
This version flips the original idea of the story, placing a girl in a world of pirates. Jim’s journey includes many funny characters not found in the original tale.
Braunton Academy is excited about the ambitious set design. After last year’s simple Macbeth, they wanted a versatile set for different locations like an inn and a ship.
Mr. Carroll, the head of drama, found inspiration while seeing the site team at work. They’ve been collecting items from local beaches to enhance the set.
Creating this production has been a challenge but also a joy. The students are working hard to make a performance that the community will love.
The show will feature lively sea shanties and music performed by students and the Braunton Community Choir.
Treasure Island will be performed on February 5, 6, and 7, 2025, at 7 PM in the Isaac Hall. Tickets are available through ParentMail or at the door. Prices are £6 for adults and £3 for children.
