Canal House sits by Devon’s Grand Western Canal. It faced being sold, but strong local feelings stopped it. Councillor Colin Slade led a campaign. Devon County Council later decided against the sale.

The building, “The Moorings,” stays with the council. Colin Slade thinks this is smart for Tiverton. The Canal House helps the canal rangers.

They fix things and teach people about the canal. The council wanted to sell it to save money. They thought rangers could work somewhere else.

Colin Slade disagreed. Moving them would hurt their work and canal education. People and canal staff said things were fine. Only small fixes were needed, they explained.

Moving rangers would make logistics harder. They would not be near their vehicles and tools. Mid Devon funding relies on Canal House being used well. They require education programs there.

Selling it threatened this funding condition. The council’s land committee discussed it strongly. They then decided to keep Canal House.

This keeps rangers working well without disruption. It also keeps the site’s educational value.
