South Devon: Tourists visiting popular spots like Salcombe and Dartmouth will pay more for parking than locals. South Hams Council has introduced a two-tier parking plan after months of discussions. Residents can get a £5 permit for discounts, but many are upset about the extra charges for visitors.

The council believes these increased fees, the first hike since April 2021, will help their budget. However, local town councils and businesses warn that higher rates could drive tourists away from South Hams.

Cllr Nicky Hopwood, a Conservative from Woolwell, called it a ‘tourism tax’. In response, council leader Julian Brazil from the Lib Dem party argued that tourists still visit places with similar taxes in Europe. Hopwood worries about the impact on local businesses and finds the discount for residents unreasonable.

Commenter Jenni Richardson suggested charging only overseas tourists, saying British visitors shouldn’t pay extra. She believes parking fees are already too high and that many will avoid the area.

Debbie Davis shared her experience in France, where all visitors pay a tourist tax. She noted that this fee helps fund local events, benefiting residents. Jayne Hyde expressed concern that these changes could harm tourism, which seaside towns depend on.

Maureen Crook criticized the high parking charges and the state of town centers, saying it drives away loyal visitors. Stephen Cowdell mentioned that a low tourist tax in France works well, as long as the money benefits the local area.

Ian Ashton disagreed, stating that the existing funds should be used better instead of imposing new taxes. Michael Heaslip, who works in tourism, noted that many tourists find the UK too expensive and may choose cheaper destinations instead.

Pete Wills, a frequent visitor to South Hams, said he won’t return due to the council’s greed. Robert Symes warned that this situation could lead to negative outcomes for the area.
