Tiverton: The housing debate is back on everyone’s lips. A developer wants to build up to 100 homes at Tidcombe Hall. But last year, the council said no.

Around 170 locals wrote in to object. They worried about the nearby Grand Western Canal and potential flooding. Plus, they feared more traffic on Tidcombe Lane.

Only part of the site is in the council’s local plan. Even then, it’s only for emergency use. The council needs to show it has five years of housing land supply.

Last year, the council claimed it had enough land. But the developer’s agent disagreed. At the planning meeting, only two people supported the new homes.

One resident, Goff Welchman, said the plan would cause traffic chaos. He pointed out that closing Tidcombe Bridge would force cars to take long detours.

Vicky Pugh echoed these concerns. She felt closing the bridge would cut off the community. She also noted that the council didn’t consult residents properly.

Safety for kids at Tidcombe Primary School is another worry. If the bridge closes, more cars would flood residential streets during school drop-off and pick-up times.

The developer’s agent, Olly Ansell, argued that the housing crisis makes this project necessary. He claimed the council’s housing supply figures were overly optimistic.

He also mentioned benefits like affordable housing and contributions to local services. However, some objectors criticized the developer’s name, saying it sounds local when it’s not.

The appeal starts on May 20. If there’s no decision by the end of that week, it will continue for up to three days later. Objectors can still submit comments until February 20.
