Devon: A headteacher is sounding the alarm about kids vaping. Matthew Shanks, who leads Education South West, recently spoke to MPs in Westminster. He’s worried about how easy it is for kids to get vapes.

Shanks was there to discuss the Tobacco and Vapes Bill. This bill aims to stop selling tobacco and vapes to anyone born after January 1, 2009. It also wants to control how these products are advertised.

He mentioned that many kids who wouldn’t smoke are trying vapes. They think it’s harmless and they’re everywhere. Shanks believes we need to change how vapes are marketed to kids. They should be seen as tools for adults trying to quit smoking.

He also called for stricter rules against shops selling vapes to minors. Shanks pointed out that many vape shops look appealing to young people. He thinks more regulations would help keep kids safe.

Recent reports show that vaping among kids is on the rise. In 2018, only 6% of kids vaped. Now, about a quarter of 11 to 15-year-olds have tried it, and nearly 10% do it regularly.

Shanks said, “At Education South West, we want to help kids live great lives. This means teaching them about healthy choices, not just what they learn in class.”

He was glad to share his concerns in Westminster. Shanks wants to see the bill move forward to protect young people and their education.
