An Post has rejected calls to use the GPO as a soup kitchen, citing its unsuitability for such services despite growing demand for homeless support.
Dublin: Recently, An Post said the GPO isn’t fit for a soup kitchen. This came after former Lord Mayor Dermot Lacey suggested using the GPO’s catering facilities for the homeless.
He pointed out that many outreach services operate outside the GPO. Dublin City Council is drafting new byelaws to regulate these services. They want to ensure safety for everyone involved.
The Council’s plan isn’t about stopping these services. Instead, it’s about making sure they run smoothly and safely. They’ll set rules for hours, locations, and other important details.
Lacey believes the GPO could help. He mentioned that most An Post staff have moved out, so the space is underused. He thinks it could be a temporary solution for those in need.
He urged An Post to work with community groups and the City Council. Lacey wants them to consider opening the GPO canteen as a soup kitchen. He believes it’s crucial to act now while planning for the future.
However, An Post disagrees. A spokesperson said the GPO is a historic building and not suitable for a soup kitchen. They emphasized the need for a professional approach to homeless services.
They also mentioned that the recommendations from the Dublin Taskforce were based on expert advice. It’s a serious matter, and they want to ensure the best support for those in need.
